Ch..Ch..Ch..Changes

Tomorrow is my last day at work.

After months of stable, consistent lovely office labor at a fabulous work place with co-workers I loved and a job where I worked hard and then was able to spend a large chunk of my time watching TV and blogging, I am moving on. First, for a whirlwind trip through China with my Chinatown court and then to an exciting new job opportunity (and life?!).

I think it’s about time that I tell you what I have been doing for the past four months.

I’m a temp.

That’s right. I said it. And I have no shame either.

Perhaps you are familiar with the temp from the comedy, The Office? Even then, I’ll bet you don’t really know what a temp is, huh? Basically, it’s like a substitute teacher for the corporate world where you go in for several days, weeks or months to work on whatever the company needs additional help with. Maybe someone’s on maternity leave, or sick, or on vacation. You fill their shoes while they’re gone. Yep, pretty much the bottom of the bottom of the totem pole. Even interns get employees’ benefits.

But it’s not as bad as it sounds!

So, the thing is, as you are all aware, it had been really hard to find a job. And one for a “prestigious” company like Disney or Warner Bros. or Universal? Fuggetaboutit. So my friend recommended that I look for a temporary position for awhile. For a capricious, commitment-phobic person like me who was hoping to explore different job opportunities in the media and entertainment industry and needing to build my office experience, it seemed like a good plan.

So what I first did was apply to a couple of temp agencies.  The AppleOne agency in Glendale specializes in placing you with media companies around Burbank and within a few weeks, I heard from them about a position available at my current company. I came in, interviewed and the rest was history.

Many temp positions lead to full-time employment and it’s a great way to broaden your knowledge of how a particular company works or try out different jobs without tying yourself down.  Think of it as an internship-but you get paid!

I definitely enjoyed my stint here. I’ll miss my awesome co-workers and even what I do! (What, filing can be a very calming, fulfilling task, ok?) Alas, a better opportunity presented itself elsewhere and I just had to take it.

If you are in a state of your life where you’re either temporarily unemployed or hoping to check out working for a big company, I would definitely recommend temping for a bit.

I will be leaving for China tomorrow night. Since I won’t be bringing my laptop and I will, quite frankly, be having way too much fun to update, this may be my last post for awhile. If I do feel the blogging itch, it will be on my travel blog, www.janjanntravels.blogspot.com. Check me out there.

See you in August!

I have this problem. I have a need to share with the world my passions and interests and hope that they will also enjoy it. Hence, this blog is born- to showcase some of the things I'm most fascinated with. Most of the posts relate to the media as it relates to me. (Blame the early twenties neurosis of thinking the world revolves around you). (More..)
