The First Task

Wednesday, 03.10.2010

I stare at the contraption, trying to hold my eyeballs from bugging out. That would be an unseemly sight for a first day.

“Already?” I thought to myself, “but it’s so soon.”

Well, they are one of the top dogs.  They had to have gotten to the top by moving fast.

I stare and I stare at the contraption, hoping that maybe the more I stare, the answer to how to use it would pop out mysteriously. But alas, no such luck.

I sit down in front of the contraption, ready to make friends with it. I lift it up. It’s light. There seems to be no openings. Oh, but wait! I think I see a handle of some sort! I lift it. It takes me inside the machinery…and still leaves me no clue as to how to use it. Seriously? Fine, we’ll be frenemies.

I couldn’t dare ask my co-worker for help. They’d laugh me out of my cubicle.  A brief thought of phoning in assistant extraordinaire crossed my mind but where would I call? In the bathroom? I don’t even know where the bathroom is! And even she, in all her congeniality, would still laugh me out of my cubicle. No, this was a matter to be sorted out privately.

I try to slide some pieces into the contraption but there seems to be no slot. But what would it print on then?!

Oooh…the “on” button. That’s a good place to start. I press it and suddenly, it’s as though a giant lightbulb lit up. You don’t need to slide paper into the label maker! It has its own paper (called tape)! And when all else-like shaking it, baking it, caressing it, making faces at it-fails, just press the “on” button!

Okay, so maybe labeling and filing is not considered a Herculean task to most, I have never used a label maker before. When the first label, marked with a show title, printed out. I was as proud as a mother hen. And then I got addicted. I made labels and made labels until all the stuff on my desk were ready to be filed away. Then, I headed over to the gigantic filing cabinets, opened it and realized…

The labels were made a different way.  I’d have to start all over to make all the files uniformed. Well, at least I now know how to make it.

I look at my watch, it’s only 10:30.

Good morning to me.

I have this problem. I have a need to share with the world my passions and interests and hope that they will also enjoy it. Hence, this blog is born- to showcase some of the things I'm most fascinated with. Most of the posts relate to the media as it relates to me. (Blame the early twenties neurosis of thinking the world revolves around you). (More..)
