Scaredy Cat

"Yikes, you're big!"

As I get up there in age, I’m realizing that I’m becoming more and more prudish. I mull things over before I jump, I debate to myself before I leap. I sweat. A lot. So not cool.

So this little scaredy-cat decided to become a tiger. Not exactly a tiger mom but talking about tiger moms.

In case you weren’t aware, America has been in a little bit of an uproar over this book: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Yale professor Amy Chua.

A memoir chronicling Chua’s decision to raise her two teenage girls up in a “traditional Chinese manner” filled with banned sleepover dates and hours and hours of piano practices, Chua’s book sparked a lot of debate on parenting, East vs. West and Chinese superiority, thanks in large part to this slightly contorted excerpt of the book in the Wall Street Journal.

For the past couple of weeks, this was a major issue that sparked tons of media coverage. ¬†Everyone seemed to have an opinion on the subject. Even–apparently–me.

Audrey Magazine was invited to speak on tiger moms on the Beyond Beijing radio show and I was volunteered to be the speaker.

Being nowhere near to having children myself, how can I talk about parenting? On live radio? For an hour? Cue panic attack.

But I did it. I took a chance using my personal past experiences as a grand-daughter of a tiger grandma and a -hyena? mountain lion?-mom and an uncanny ability to bullsh*t to talk about the subject amidst UCLA professors and non-profit organizers. I mean, why not? The invitation scared me so I knew I had to do it.

You can listen to the panel discussion here.

Excited to be spending this new year doing more things I’m deathly afraid of. I’m not being handed anything more than I can handle so bring it!

Grats! Macau Tower this year? ;)

I listened for 40 min. I didn’t have time to finish, I’ll catch it back in HK. =)

I personally support tiger moms though.

    Hey Ms. MM
Congratulations on seeing the opportunity in an intimidating situation. Public speaking is hard enough without having to speak about such a hot topic.

Btw I know what you mean about getting old and becoming more prudish, I just can’t see myself clubbing and partying with this “Jersey Shore” crowd lol..

    Thanks for the great read,

I have this problem. I have a need to share with the world my passions and interests and hope that they will also enjoy it. Hence, this blog is born- to showcase some of the things I'm most fascinated with. Most of the posts relate to the media as it relates to me. (Blame the early twenties neurosis of thinking the world revolves around you). (More..)
