Fall TV

Tuesday, 09.27.2011

I’m always excited when it’s the start of a new season. Winter because it’s cozy and cold and the holidays always make me feel warm and fuzzy (so yea, I like cold and warm stuff at the same time). Summer because of vacations and the easy, breezy vibe that everything seems to be on a temporary hold. I like Spring because you can finally step outside and indulge in some sunlight. There’s flowers and stuff–yea, I’m actually not a big fan of Spring because I can’t seem to breathe through my nose nor taste anything in my mouth nor open my eyes because of allergies.

But Fall. Oh, Fall.

Fall is glorious. It’s a symbol of new beginnings. It takes me back to grade school days when I would start school again and go back-to-school shopping and watch leaves fall and feel a breath of fresh wind.

Oh, and there’s also the return of Fall TV, where all my tube favorites come back and reunite with me on weeknights. Welcome back, guys! I’ve missed you so! (I have real friends too, I swear. Though sometimes I ditch them to cozy up to my Hulu on Saturday nights.)

I’ve noticed that the new shows this year are really quite female-centric.  And for that, I say, “You go, girls!” with a *snap and a twist of my head (however you do that).

Some promising ones:

NEW GIRL

Kudos to Zooey Deschanel and the rest of the ‘New Girls’ team for crafting a fleshed out, female character that’s funny and pathetic, hot and dorky, silly and serious all at once. Even just by watching the pilot, there are moments of Zooey’s Jess that I find in myself. Case(s) in point:

-Jess’s constant sing-songness of everyday sentences. I do that at work all the time. My boss gets annoyed. And I respond “sorry” in a sing-song voice.
-There was a line in the pilot where Jess tells a bartender pouring her some rose wine, “The pink one makes my slutty” which reminded me of my own moment when at a club in HK, I ran up to my friends and whispered, “The drunker I get, the sluttier I get!” I then proceeded to giggle and run away.

I wasn’t too keen on the storyline in the pilot but I’m willing to watch some more episodes to see how the characters develop. In any case, how can you resist Zooey Deschanel?

2 BROKE GIRLS

Now 2 Broke Girls, I feel, really does have a grasp on breaking character stereotypes or rather, just making fun of all of them so we’re on a level playing field.

We have (spoiler alert) a super-smart sassy brunette who is still stupid enough to fall for a loafing lothario with abs of steel. There’s a pert blonde heiress who’s actually a hardworking, Wharton school grad. Who knows who else they will create on the show? I’m willing to find out.

And then we have some old friends returning.

Happy Endings

I read somewhere that the magic in an ensemble sitcom is not necessarily in how original the new show can be but rather, how great the chemistry of the cast is. Because then, no matter how familiar the situations are, you’ll still want to keep up with the show to see how your favorite Friends (excuse the pun) are doing.

The cast of Happy Endings has got the chemistry down pat and they also bring a fresh spin to the pretty conservative sitcom genre. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an out and proud gay man who does not act flamboyant–but rather– acts pretty macho, on TV before. I don’t see many African American men happily married to type-A, blonde WASPs. There’s a lot I haven’t seen that I find on this show so looking forward to more.

MODERN FAMILY

I love watching shows that keep a smile on my face long after the credits finished running. This show has the perfect combination of slapstick comedy, lightning-speed wit, gigantic-sized heart, and that warm fuzzy feeling like you’ve learned something about the world after each episode.

Plus, they’ve cast a new Lily! She’s absolutely adorable and from the first two episodes, hilarious like her mom! (Well, her real-life mom, comedienne Amy Anderson. On the show, she don’t got no mom — she got two daddies!)

Also cannot wait for Shameless and How I Met Your Mother to return! Oh, and researching on Mindy Kaling has made me start to enjoy The Office again. Whee! TV!

What shows have you been keeping up with? (And if you say Keeping Up With the Kardashians, so help me…)

I watch the new girl . I like the show a lot. I’ve been meaning to tell you this for a while: Jess reminds me so much of you its insane. Hahaha for better or for awkwardness.

I like broke girls too. The promo made it seem really lame but the script is smart. I’m glad I ended up wathing the pilot by accident .

I have this problem. I have a need to share with the world my passions and interests and hope that they will also enjoy it. Hence, this blog is born- to showcase some of the things I'm most fascinated with. Most of the posts relate to the media as it relates to me. (Blame the early twenties neurosis of thinking the world revolves around you). (More..)
