Old Is New Again

Thursday, 05.12.2011

I come from a family of shoppers. Doesn’t matter if we’re rich or poor, we love buying things, returning them, trying them on, buying them for other people, etc etc. I’m the black sheep of the family because even though I do get into the shopping mode once in awhile, I don’t tend to like to spend my money on clothes. Food, yes. Clothes, no.

But this past week, I got the itch. I started seeing pretty things in magazines and on TV and wanting them. Ooh that dress. Aah that shirt!

A quick trip to the mall proved disappointing. I realized that most of the things I coveted that were in style, I had already worn in 6th grade. It seems like these days, what’s old is so old it’s become new again. Why would I want to buy a denim jacket again when it seemed like it was just yesterday I was strutting around wearing one?

I headed to my favorite shop: my family’s storage closet. And I dug and I dug and I dug.

And I found treasures!

Now, the next part is going to be a little uncomfortable for you and I. For me because I have to model some of the clothes I found and for you because, well, you have to look at pictures of me modeling some clothes for you. If you want to leave this site now, you may.

(Did I just make things awkward?)

But for those unabashed, here it is!

My loot.

My first find was this humongous GAP denim jumper dress that I think I actually used to wear. I’m lucky I was an overweight child because now I can fit into all my old clothes!

I cut the top to spice things up (and also give my chest a little breathing room) and then strapped a belt around the waist to break up the color.

Next find was this adorable vintage red sweater with a fun cow design! Now, if improperly worn, I could look like a really fobby girl still stuck in the 90′s.

But I sliced off the sleeves and lowered the neckline to give it a ballerina sweats kind of look. Comfy to lounge around in!

This sweater dress was perfect. No alterations needed.

As was this baby denim button-up that had a sweet penguin design.

I rolled up the sleeves and paired the top with a flowery dress for a summery cowboy look. I saw Jenna Ushkowitz wearing an outfit similar to this just that morning so I decided to steal her look.

My FAVORITE FAVORITE find was this cream-colored Calvin Klein-esque slip dress. This is so like the “it” dress this season!

I can totally see myself throwing a crochet shawl over it and heading off to a summer wedding.

Okay, so every treasure hunt can come with some accidents and I kind of regret taking my scissor to this babydoll dress. This churchy-looking confection looks like something I could still fit into so I tried it on…nope. Seems I have grown some. Now, the responsible Janice should have saved the dress for my niece or friends’ kids but I thought I could fix it. So I cut it up…

And tried it on upside down, flipping some of the collars and what not.

The end result was kind of cute but we’ll have to see if I ever muster up the courage to wear it outside. Hey, I’m daring but maybe not that daring!

What shall I take my summer wardrobe to do this season?

I have this problem. I have a need to share with the world my passions and interests and hope that they will also enjoy it. Hence, this blog is born- to showcase some of the things I'm most fascinated with. Most of the posts relate to the media as it relates to me. (Blame the early twenties neurosis of thinking the world revolves around you). (More..)
