Another year, another birthday

Sunday, 02.3.2013

Another year, another birthday.

I’ve never been one to be super big on my birthdays but have been super blessed by family and friends who celebrated with me with fine company, cake, balloons, birthday blessings and lots and lots of love.

This year was no exception. I got to get all warm and fuzzy with my family over a hot pot meal, thanks to my mom and dad. My sis orchestrated an amazing day of bowling, beers, best cupcakes and belly laughs. My amazing family (aunt, uncle, cousins Cissy, Donnie, Irene, Chris) blessed me with beautiful wishes and very generous and *ahem practical gifts. My friends lent their hands with helping out, getting me awesome balloons, writing heartwarming cards and just blessing blessing blessing me with their presence and smiles (and drinks). I feel so loved especially because I’ve been here in Hong Kong for a little less than a year, away from the only home I’ve ever known and yet, people are making me feel so welcome.

When people talk about birthdays, it’s usually associated with dread over turning another year older. I’d have to disagree. Save for the one year when I turned 21 and had a mini-panic attack, I’ve always been okay about turning another year older. Even looked forward to it sometimes. The way I see it:

I’m not turning no fax no direct deposit payday loans another year older, I’m turning another year wiser.

I’m not heading towards death, I’m heading closer to eternal life.

I’m not decaying, I’m just learning to treasure my body more.

I’m not getting more boring, I’ve become more certain of who I am and what I want out of life.

I’m not becoming more jaded, I’m becoming more appreciative of all the good things in this world.

I’m not becoming less popular, I’m becoming more selective over who I value enough to spend my time with.

I’m not regretful I’m still stuck making the same mistakes sometimes, I’m grateful I’m picking up the pieces faster after I’ve made the mistakes and lessening the frequency in making them.

I’m not leaving the good ol’ days behind, I’m getting closer and closer to the best days of our lives.

Not only am I 26 years old, I’m 56 years wise, 16 years strong, 6 years innocent, 16 years adventurous, eternally joyful.

I would never want to be the person I was 1, 2, 3 years ago. That Janice was naive, selfish, quick-tempered, on shaky grounds, cared so much more about the little things that won’t last, cared so much more about what other people thought. This Janice… because of Him… so much better :)

Thanks to everyone who’s wished me a happy birthday and helped me celebrate!

My friend Paul Gor rolled into town and asked if I wanted to take pictures.

Why not?

So I put on my best green polka dotted dress and Toms (just because I could) and proceeded to Central where we posed for shots for Paul’s big-ass camera and let HK’s pedestrians gawk, wondering in their heads what the hell we’re doing.

Sis needed shots for her food blog anyway so she also came along and we got some GREAT STUFF for her! (I say “we” even though it was really all Paul and her but you know, I held her bags…and swept away her stray strands of hair…and ate chicken wings while they shot together…and stuff…)

Ooh! I made this (above)! Impressive, no?

Someone nexus pheromones asked me if I feel weird when I pose for pictures.
The answer is heck yah I do! Especially when it’s the more serious “modely” kind. I’ve even written a whole blog post on it before. (A serious case of investigative journalism there, I tell ya.)

Inside, I always feel more like this…

Goofy, overly exuberant…

It actually takes a lot for me to control my facial expressions. But sometimes, I come out pleasantly surprised with the results.

Of course, most of the credit goes to Paul’s artistic way with the camera rather than my less than excellent modeling skills.

Fun (and exhausting!) day was had by all! Now that I have this bunch of cool pictures, what should I do with it?

Breaking Bread Pt. 3

Tuesday, 06.12.2012

Apologies for the lack of updates as of late. Still adjusting to my new job so setting aside some Media Maid stuff for the time being.

But I do have time to post up pictures of food!

Xiao Long Bao. Juicy juicy. I heated up these frozen ones for lunch one day. They looked so pretty I could barely stand to eat them.

…Ah who am I kidding. Gobbled up within seconds!

Sis and I live right next to a cooked food centre but we never visited until one adventurous lunchtime. It was surprisingly really really delicious! (And the price tag didn’t hurt either *wink wink) I frequented another one on a workday lunch with my coworkers one day. Still good! Still cheap! You must try it if you don’t mind all the construction workers ogling at you (if you’re a girl because it was Eye Secrets pretty much men that ate there).

Happy hour with good friends are always such an enjoyable thing for me. Sushi lunches with family as well. <3

Mmm.. Tsui Wah. Such a staple to our HK diet. Left) their fish ball noodle soup and Right) their french brick toast. So bad but so good for you.

Dim Sum. My parents visited for a couple of days so we got some dim sum in.

Desserts. I am really itching to try more more more HK desserts. Like these egg custards in actual eggshells on the left! So cool I would have taken an egg shell home but then Sis would just harp at me, saying, “You’re such a junk collector” and it’s just not worth it. Right) Ingenious milk and cookies from Gusto in Happy Valley. I was a happy girl, I tell ya.

Eat well!

Writing On

Friday, 06.1.2012

The past couple of weeks have been filled with parents and friends in town and job hunting. It was a good balance because I really started to dig deep and apply EVERYWHERE for EVERYTHING. Hopefully something pans out! But in the meantime, just wanted to share my good friend Shirley’s baby.

Lest you think that my friend birthed a full-grown woman in a wide-rimmed beach hat and all, Shirley’s baby is actually a magazine that she created called free sample vivaxa Minted.

Minted is a quarterly online women’s lifestyle and business magazine aimed “for the modern career girl.” This latest issue has special sections focused on eco-friendly living and for soon-to-be mothers! The cover even features eco-friendly swimwear designer Mallory Curlee of CurleeBikinis.

I contributed to Shirley’s baby this edition and can’t wait to show you when the full edition is out! Until then, follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Dream big, boys and girls!

I’m so grateful for friends.

The ones that, even though I don’t get to see many times a year, when I do, it’s like nothing has changed. Friends that support and build me up. Friends that don’t judge. Friends that give, give, give.

I’ve already had a few visitors since being in Hong Kong (apparently, it’s one of those places people just pop in and out of). Mek, JLo, SkyWood to name a few meratol reviews.

I get very excited whenever new people visit because I get to play tour guide (even though most times, as my friends can attest to you, I barely know the place myself and they end up suggesting something to do even though they’re the visitors, sigh…)

Ah well… it’s not the destination but the journey and the company, right?

I especially like it when they bring gifts *wink wink.

Thanks for visiting, visitors!

High High Tea

Thursday, 05.17.2012

High tea…

Ah, what a regal affair this British afternoonly (it is a word because I say so) ritual implies.

Sipping on some caffeinated concoctions…

While munching on some sweet and savories…

All the while admiring THIS view 100+ floors above ground.

High tea indeed!

Jlo and I high-tea-ed at Tsim Sha Tsui’s famously towering Ritz-Carlton Hotel where we giggled like giddy schoolgirls while dainty tai-tai’s and powerful execs surrounded us.

JLo also snapped plenty of pictures with her pro camera. I snapped pictures of her with my iPhone like I was a crazy fan.

Oh yea, I also made this semi-shaky video documenting our afternoon at the Ritz.

Pardon the giggling, when you’re with one of your best girlfriends, you can’t help but to laugh a lot. :D

Dance Your Weekend Away

Monday, 05.14.2012

I had a super fun weekend this weekend. But this post will be about last weekend because I was a lazy bum and didn’t post until now.

Last weekend was fun too.

One where I didn’t need to go to the gym afterwards for days.

It all started on a cool Thursday night where my cousins and I jumped and grooved to Lady Gaga live in concert.

The concert was amazebaaaaaalls. Lady Gaga is pretty weird sometimes but one thing’s for sure — she is a talented and hardworking artist who genuinely seems to love her fans.

The best part of the concert would have to be cousin (and sister) time because that’s just priceless. I’ve missed watching Volume Pills my talented cousins dance! (Sorry the photo doesn’t show us dancing)

Then on Saturday, I attended one_eighty, which is my church’s youth ministry and danced again! For the glory of God. We danced with our fellow African refugees and I had the most amazing time seeing everyone’s joy in performing for the Lord.

On Saturday, I did this thing called clubbing (“po” in Cantonese) and I danced again! Except this time it was at Play, this super crowded popular club in Hong Kong and… I actually didn’t get to dance much at all. Ah well…I think the other two days made up for it. :)

Did you get to let loose and jive over the weekend?

Jin’s MV Shoot Turned Into An Arts & Craft Party

Saturday, 04.21.2012

What do you get…
…when you put together an abandoned warehouse in the far side of the nowheres…

…with a crazy conglomeration of finger paint, sprinkles, confetti, spongey-stick-thingies, lemonade mix, balloons, plastic balls, and a cup of lemon tea?

Why…a music video shoot, of course!

This one was for Jin for his latest single, “Brand New Me.”

Carmen and I happened to be visiting our friend, Carl (top of the ladder in the photo above) and we were forced at gunpoint politely asked to take part in helping to make the music video. Honestly, I think we totally made made the video (if ya know what I mean) but Jin was pretty good too *wink wink.

What exactly did we do for the video? Well, let’s just Payday Loans say, our lovely clean feet went from this:

To that:

{ Final photo courtesy of Carm and no, I did not grow a pair of man’s legs –these belong to Carl. }

Even though I was butt tired after leaving the shoot early, I kinda loved it because there was just so much passion, laughter, camaraderie, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to get things done, present on the set. The shoot’s vibe had all the makings of putting together one of those video projects in high school in the best way possible. Definitely was  feeling the love.

To find out what Jin gets put through in order to become a brand new him, catch his new music video when it comes out June 4th!

Shanghai Street Studio

Tuesday, 04.17.2012

It’s funny what a difference one floor can make. Though I landed at the wrong floor of a building (and nearly went into a brothel!), I finally ended up on the right floor where my intended destination, Shanghai Street Studio, is located.

My friend Carmen was shooting the creative space and profiling the founders of the studio along with JJ from The Wanderlister and I got to tag along.

The space was seriously cool! So much random mish-mash of stuff to photograph! I played amateur photog.

I’m really amazed by how God put people in our lives at certain times. Who would have known that I would be able to spend so much quality time with this girl I met with a group of friends at Disneyland that one time a long long time ago. Funny how through God, we are put on this path to guide and love on one another.

Love you, girl!

{ The first time Carmen and I met. Teehee }

I have this problem. I have a need to share with the world my passions and interests and hope that they will also enjoy it. Hence, this blog is born- to showcase some of the things I'm most fascinated with. Most of the posts relate to the media as it relates to me. (Blame the early twenties neurosis of thinking the world revolves around you). (More..)
