Oh death! Where is your sting?

Saturday, 07.21.2012

This morning, as I read the names of the 12 victims of the Aurora movie theater shooting, I wept.

I cried for the victims’ families. I cried for the tragedy of a life cut short. I cried for the sobering fact that this could happen to anyone, anywhere and that in life, there is no Batman who can save Gotham city from peril.

Oh, but there is.

Oh death! Where is your sting?
Oh hell! Where is your victory?
Oh Church! Come stand in the light!
Our God is not dead. He’s alive! He’s alive!

The unnaturalness of human beings and our aversion to death leads me to strongly believe that maybe it isn’t supposed to be this way. Why do we fear death so? Why do we want to live forever? (Provided that our loved ones also live forever with us.) Perhaps it is because there is indeed something that comes after death.

Through my walk with God, I feel this is true more and more. And because it is true, all the more am I called to live a purpose-driven life — not wasting it away on shallow, surface-grazing relationships that will only fulfill fleshly prideful needs nor staying tucked in comfort and familiarity. No, it’s living a life with meaningful relationships, demonstrating that the power of Christ and His love can defy all previous notions of life, love, and death.

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave.

Once your world view shifts to a reassurance and peace that you will have an eternity to be spent living with, glorifying and loving your God, it should wake you up profollica scam to start life NOW. To tell everyone you know about the amazingness of this fact, to save souls. Do you ever notice how in scary movies, when the killer/monster is going after the victim, when the victim is scared, we are scared. However, when they are not scared to die, we as movie viewers also lose that fear even though the killer/monster may still be just as menacing. That loss of fear emboldens us, gives us courage.

I used to be afraid of writing “crazy” blog posts like this. Afraid that people will think of me as a “crazy Christian.” But in the three years since I’ve made the decision to pursue a relationship with God and walk this life as a Christian, God has only pulled me closer and closer to Him. He’s only made me realize how a relationship with Him is the ultimate one worth pursuing. He’s made things happen in my life that I can confidently say would never have happened otherwise. And he’s filled my heart with this infinite well of joy and peace that I know I would have never found anywhere else.

I want you to have that same kind of peace, joy, love floating around in your life. That is why I am writing this in the hopes that you will read it. If you toss me off as a “crazy Christian,” that’s fine with me. It’s true, I am crazy. Crazy about this life. Crazy about how though life can be heartbreaking, tragic, and traumatic but also amazing, hopeful, and filled with grace. Crazy about how much God loves us. I could stay “normal” but seriously, life –this life at least– is too short for that.

Jin’s MV Shoot Turned Into An Arts & Craft Party

Saturday, 04.21.2012

What do you get…
…when you put together an abandoned warehouse in the far side of the nowheres…

…with a crazy conglomeration of finger paint, sprinkles, confetti, spongey-stick-thingies, lemonade mix, balloons, plastic balls, and a cup of lemon tea?

Why…a music video shoot, of course!

This one was for Jin for his latest single, “Brand New Me.”

Carmen and I happened to be visiting our friend, Carl (top of the ladder in the photo above) and we were forced at gunpoint politely asked to take part in helping to make the music video. Honestly, I think we totally made made the video (if ya know what I mean) but Jin was pretty good too *wink wink.

What exactly did we do for the video? Well, let’s just Payday Loans say, our lovely clean feet went from this:

To that:

{ Final photo courtesy of Carm and no, I did not grow a pair of man’s legs –these belong to Carl. }

Even though I was butt tired after leaving the shoot early, I kinda loved it because there was just so much passion, laughter, camaraderie, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to get things done, present on the set. The shoot’s vibe had all the makings of putting together one of those video projects in high school in the best way possible. Definitely was  feeling the love.

To find out what Jin gets put through in order to become a brand new him, catch his new music video when it comes out June 4th!

Motivational Monday: ‘When The Lights Come On’ – Jin ft. Joseph Vincent

Monday, 12.5.2011

The allure to clubbing wore me out after only a few short years. When friends ask me to go now and I say, “nah, I’m kind of over it,” they reply, “Whaa! But you’re only [however young you think I am]!”

Trust me, I had my fun(?) back in the heyday.

Short skirts, sky-high heels, false lashes, shots, shots, more shots, chasing down with a can of Coke, cramming into cars, avoiding being designated drivers, long lines before you even see the dance floor, getting in because you’re a girl, checking out people, checking out people checking you out, loud loud LOUD MUSIC, a mess of faces, squeezing between those faces, drinks, more drinks, being careful not to spill drinks, spilling drinks, oops, loud, can’t hear, can’t think, just moving, moving any part of my body that can feel the beat, checking out, any cute guys?, no cute guys, how about average guys?, how about just a guy that’s taller than me?, spot target, smile, yelling things, “what’s your name?”, “wanna dance?”, dance, dance, revolution, pained feet, numb feet, step, step, step, jump, jump, wave your hands in the air, toss the hair around a bit, hands on waist, hands on hips, hands on — don’t even think about it, shake shake, “wanna drink?”, more drinks, how many drinks am I on? I don’t care, just want a cup in my hand, the music has become indistinguishable, one tune sounds like the other, “Ooh I love this song! At least I think I do…”, jump, jump, turn around, holding hands, with whoever — boy, girl, friend, stranger, dance, dance, ‘I’m getting sleepy”, eyes can’t stay open anymore, dance, turn, dance, jump, sip drink, toss hair, toss toss, lights ON, people looking a lot more towed up and tired than I thought they were, uncontrollable giggles, smooch, need water, need water NOW, heading home, talking WAY TOO LOUDLY in the car, dozing off, get into bed, KNOCKED OUT.

Sound familiar? I get the whole clubbing culture and why people can think it’s so fun and freeing, especially after a long work week or an especially tough finals period but after awhile, it just all started to feel the same to me. No matter how hip or hot or happening a club is, at the end of the day, it’s just another dark crowded space with loud music blasting on high jam-packed with a bunch of people looking to hook up or be drunk out of their minds or the occasional rare person who actually just wants to dance (that’s me *cough cough).

This music video and song perfectly encapsulates how I feel about the whole clubbing thing now:

We are made for more. We are made for so much more.

The funny thing is, I do still go to clubs every once in a (long) while. But I don’t go looking for a hookup anymore and I really do dance like nobody’s watching (sometimes it’s really not a pretty sight so you actually really shouldn’t be watching). And you know what? I have the best time ever when I do that.

Shoutouts to homeboys Joseph Vincent and Tom Ngo for the awesome video and nice to know Jin still got it!)

Oh Happy Day!

Sunday, 09.4.2011

One of the best classes I took during my undergrad at UCLA was this Gospel Choir class every Friday morning.

At that time, I had just wanted something fun and the class was fun, indeed.

With a teacher behind the pianos, we went through gospel songs celebrating and appreciating God. At that time, an atheist me just found the songs to be delicious to sing and dance to. Let the hands clap! Let the voices tremor! Gospel Choir easily became the one class I most looked forward to every week, even though it meant I would actually have to wake my butt up and get to campus every Friday.

Now, I can see that I was being drawn to the light and to the Lord because it is inherently right to be praising the Lord for all that He has done for us and for all that He is.

And I know I’m not the only one who thinks so.  WitnessLA posted about Jesus showing up at Oprah’s Legends Ball earlier this summer. Take a look. It’s moving.

Happy Sunday, all!

Audrey’s Fall Cover Gal | Jenna Ushkowitz

Monday, 08.8.2011

I love my job sometimes.

Sure, there’s plenty of sitting around at my desk, my shoulders strained so hard it feels like it’s going to cave in on me and exchanging frustrating emails with catty publicists who think they own the world but sometimes, there are magical moments where we’re creating art and telling stories.

Like Audrey Mag‘s fall cover shoot with Jenna Ushkowitz. (Shown here getting all dolled up for the shoot.)

We placed Jenna in the middle of Park Plaza, in all its old Hollywood glam, dolled her up in sleek evening gowns and pearls where Diana took dreamy shots of her.

Check out the behind-the-scenes coverage and interview we got, with the help of Asian American entertainment network MYX TV. You’ll get the inside scoop on Jenna’s make-out sessions with Harry Shum, Jr. and her favorite Glee episodes.

I can’t wait to share the rest of our shots–and the magazine– with you! Audrey Magazine Fall 2011 issue hits stands early September. Purchase your copy here.

{“Gumption” from The Holiday soundtrack}

noun /ˈgəmpSHən/
1. initiative; aggressiveness; resourcefulness: With his gumption he’ll make a success of himself.
2. courage; spunk; guts: It takes gumption to quit a high-paying job.
3. common sense; shrewdness.

It was a dark, dark evening.

We were in the study lounge of our residence hall.

It was nearing midnight. One of my roommates, Evelyn, several hall mates and even that random guy that always came to study at our lounge even though he didn’t live there were way due for a break. We were near delirium studying for the finals.

I busted out this song to listen to and started shaking my head, my shoulders and my arms to it just ’cause it was so dang catchy. Evelyn caught on. We synchronized our moves. We would replay the song over and over again moving the same way, cracking up sometimes, completely stone-faced other times.

To this day, it’s still one of my favorite songs. Probably because the title is my favorite word. Both for it’s meaning and just the way it rolls off my tongue. It’s plump and satisfying, like taking a big bite of macaroni and cheese.

May we live our lives with lots and lots of gumption (and mac and cheese).

Dia Dominates ‘The Voice’

Wednesday, 06.29.2011

Now that The Voice fever has officially swept the nation, my Facebook news feed, and the Audrey office, I can finally voice (heh heh) my love for the top 4 finalists.

Beverly McClellan, Vicci Martinez, and Javier Colon are all freakin’ telegenic mofos who have more talent in their pinky finger than my whole 5’7″ frame so forgive me for being a little jealous. However, the one I’m rooting for will definitely have to be the soft-spoken folksy half-Korean Dia Frampton.

Motivational Monday: Good Life

Sunday, 06.19.2011

“Oh this has gotta be the good life
This has gotta be the good life
This could really be a good life, good life
Say oh, got this feeling that you can’t fight
Like this city is on fire tonight
This could really be a good life
A good, good life”

I watched Bridesmaids for the second time and fell in love with the movie even more. Everything was pitch-perfect, from Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy’s delightful performances, to just the right balance of crude toilet humor and quick wit, to the awdorable love story. Yet, my favorite part is when Meghan beats the sh*t out of Annie on the couch and forces her to come to terms with the self-pity party she’s having.

Stop blaming the world for your problems and you’ll see that life is freakin’ good if you’ll just let it be.

I have this problem. I have a need to share with the world my passions and interests and hope that they will also enjoy it. Hence, this blog is born- to showcase some of the things I'm most fascinated with. Most of the posts relate to the media as it relates to me. (Blame the early twenties neurosis of thinking the world revolves around you). (More..)
